Hiking at the Coast

Our family was long overdue for a good hike and it had been a while since we'd gone to the coast, so I suggested we combine the two.  We settled on Cape Meares, which I'd done once before about 8 years ago when my brother came to visit.  I remembered anemones and starfish from that hike so long ago, and knew the kids would love it.

First discovery on the trail: newts!  The kids found a couple all on their own, and were completely mesmerized by these little creatures.

It was pretty cute!

Harper was a little skeptical...

...and ultimately decided she didn't like to be that up close and personal with nature.

Pretty berries along the trail.

Claire was so excited to find a mermaid's purse!

No anemones or starfish this time around, which was a bummer, but it was still a great beach and coastline.

These little jellies were washed up all over the beach.

Claire was one tough cookie!  She took a spill on our climb down to the beach, but she didn't make a fuss about it.

This was not an easy hike for kids - it was uphill almost the whole way back, and the climb down to the beach, and of course up again, was pretty hairy.  But they handled it like champs, and Henry even asked the next day when we could go back again.
