It's All Happenin' At the Zoo

Two Dollar Tuesdays. It's an event that can simultaneously instill both joy and dread into the hearts of parents. Joy that one can get themselves and any child under 3 into the zoo for, yep, you guessed it, only $2. Dread that EVERY parent in the Portland metro area will want to do likewise. I have heard horror stories that the crowds are so thick that you can't even see the animals. That parking is a nightmare. That it's not worth it to go. But my friend and I decided that we were going to do it. Even if it rained, we were going to brave the weather and take the kids to the zoo.

Luckily we picked a day that had morning drizzle and clouds in the forecast. Mostly just clouds though. We hoped that the threat of rain would keep most people away. We were right (It's a misconception to think that Portlanders like to do outdoor activities in the rain - almost as silly as thinking people who grow up in Green Bay are immune to the cold. But that's a different story altogether...).

We got there early, endured only one brief misting of rain, and enjoyed many sun breaks. We packed a lunch, took our time, and were ready to go home just as the crowds were pouring in, once they realized it really wasn't going to rain.

Claire loved it. She cried every time we would leave an animal, despite my explanation that we needed to move on to see something else. She has been to the zoo before. But this was the first time since she's been able to actually name some of the animals. These were some of her favorites:

The fish. She loves fish right now. She wants to watch "Finding Nemo" when she wakes up from a nap. These fish were a hit.

We had a good time at the Lion pen. She loved all of the big cats.

So Claire doesn't really distinguish between zebras and horses yet. She kept calling this a horse. It's cute that she can give a name to it, anyway.

We love the zoo too! It's one of our favorite places to go with the family. And I can't believe Claire is saying all those words already!!! Little miss Mia won't say anything! :(

Halloween, Take One

This year for Halloween we decided to go as Mario Kart!  We were all so excited to put our costumes together.  Henry, of course, wanted to ...
