Sad realization

You know how fashion sometimes borrows from previous decades, maybe adding a twist or an update here or there, but essentially the essence of the long-lost era is there? I remember at some point in high school, the late 60's was inspiration. We wore flared pants. You could walk into any store and find tie dye and peace signs. Oh, we were so retro.

Imagine my horror last week when Adam and I took a quick trip to the mall. I am pushing my baby in the stroller and guffawed at the clothing in the window of one of the stores. I made my snide comment. "Hey--1987 called and they want their clothing back." And then I stopped short. That Mickey Mouse sweatshirt--you all know the old-school Mickey who is looking to one side with his arms behind his back and one foot turned up at the heel--and a t-shirt with multi-colored neon stripes across the chest were something I would have thought normal fashion choices when I was a kid. And there they were in the shop window. Fashion getting inspiration from previous decades. Except this time, styles were being borrowed FROM WITHIN MY OWN LIFETIME. I have hit that sad milestone. I am old enough that fashion is borrowing from a previous decade that I have actually lived through. Will I buy into it? Not on your life.

Welcome to my world! Shocking isn't it. A little sad too. But then, it gives you ammo when your kids slam "your generation". All you have to say is, "Why are you complaining. It was so good they are doing it again and your wearing it!"

I hope the side-sike of the early 90s comes back in. That was an easy hair-cut to manage.

How do you think I feel? I keeps coming back...generation after generation. I guess it doesn't really matter anyway...

Ann always laughs about women in their 40's and 50's who do the legging thing. She said if you did it before and were old enough to consciously do it (as opposed to a baby or young'un who had their clothes picked out for them)you are absolutely NOT allowed to do it again. So I guess that answers the question of weather or not you should buy into it.

To Erin's very good and valid point, I add another question. If you were too scared to participate in the trend the first time around, are you allowed to indulge this time?
